We know birth matters

Those of us who support birth know that the experiences of our births stay with us and have a lasting impact. How we feel about our birth begins the story of our parenting. With the COVID-19 pandemic, birth has become an even more complex experience within the system.

As a birth professional...

Do you see your clients and patients develop trauma from their births? Do you feel overwhelmed or just need some clarity about it? Do you fear that you will see an increase in trauma with the recent developments and feel powerless? While over 30% of those giving birth describe the experience as traumatic, up to 8% will go on to develop PTSD as a result of the experience. It's my opinion that these numbers will increase over the coming months. As birth professionals, we will undoubtedly attend traumatic births (virtually or in-person) and yet we are given little if any information about best practices for preventing trauma to our clients. What are we supposed to do here? Can we do anything?

Description

In this class we will discuss:
  • What is birth trauma?
  • Who is most at risk for PTSD after birth?
  • What are the signs of birth trauma?
  • What can we do in the birth room (virtually or in-person) to minimize psychological trauma to our clients?
  • What are the ‘two pathways” that lead to Postpartum trauma and how can you help?
  • Research updates on trauma
  • What is post-traumatic growth after a traumatic birth and what determines the lucky clients who experience it? (hint: you can help!)
  • Introducing Krysta’s brand new “Trauma-Informed Care Provider Model”- a 3 step model which helps you protect your clients’ psychological vulnerabilities to trauma, access their strengths and prevent the long-term formation of trauma.
This class will emphasize therapeutic skills that can be adapted to the real world by an experienced licensed trauma therapist and certified doula who has been there. Perfect for nurses, midwives, OBs, and doulas.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define birth trauma and understand who is most at risk.
  2. Understand the most common reasons why birth trauma occurs.
  3. Learn ways that we can prevent or protect against birth trauma at the very next birth we support.
  4. Discuss specific strategies we can use to help our clients or patients prevent or lessen birth trauma symptoms they already have.
  5. Demonstrate updated knowledge of research literature related to birth trauma including COVID 19.
  6. Understand the systemic factors which influence and perpetuate the phenomenon of Postpartum PTSD.
  7. Understand Post-Traumatic Growth as it relates to Postpartum PTSD and gain concrete skills to improve clients’ resilience after trauma.
  8. Master two clinical models to serve Trauma-Informed Care and Develop Birth Trauma Resilience.

Jennifer

This class is such an eye opener. We see birth as so natural and never really thought of the trauma that one can suffer. Thanks for giving me resources to be able to help my patients cope and support them.

Yansi

I loved looking at the way the brain interprets events and memories and the ways that we can help or hurt the primal laboring brain. I learned more about hacking the autonomic nervous system with therapeutic techniques but also language and thought that it was really helpful to hear Krysta's perspective and get tips on how to manage consent and trauma formation during emergency situations.
